Online skills practice

There are so many online resources available for kids that it's hard to know where to begin. As part of our ongoing research and development, we have compiled a list of free, age-appropriate games that we believe are effective for practicing basic skills.

Kindergarten

In kindergarten math, your child will:

  • count objects and tell how many there are
  • write numerals 0-20
  • compare numbers or sets of objects to tell which has more or less
  • add & subtract quickly and easily to 5
  • add & subtract within 10 using objects, fingers, drawings, numbers, or equations
  • solve addition and subtraction story problems
  • understand that teen numbers are 10 and some more
  • identify and describe shapes
  • understand length and weight as something that can be measured

The following selection of games and activities will help your child to practice these skills at home:

Counting

Counting Fish The player counts small numbers of animated fish. Talk to your child about different ways to count the fish, perhaps by finding groups of 2 or 3 fish. Players scoring 70% or better will move to the next level. The directions are spoken aloud.

Counting Games Choose from an assortment of games: Teddy Numbers, Underwater Counting, Gingerbread Man Games, Ladybird Spots.

Number Frames   Use frames to count, represent, compare, and compute. This free manipulative is available both as an app on online.

Number Rack Count and compare moveable, colored beads. This free manipulative is available both as an app and online.

Ten Frame Select from several games that challenge students to count objects, build numbers, or answer basic addition problems using a ten frame. A Five Frame is also available.

Numbers: Recognize, Order, and Compare

Connect the Dots with Artt Games Connect dots by clicking on numbers in order to make a picture.

Numerical Order Players order numbers from 1-10 (Level 1) and 11-20 (Level 2). Audio directions.

Up or Down the Number Line? View a bee on a number line and push a right or left arrow so the bee flies in the correct direction toward a target number.

Balloon Pop Comparison Pop the balloon to match a statement, either "greater number" or "lesser number."

Basic Addition and Subtraction

Marble Math Players see and hear an addition problem. They can drag marbles onto a work surface to help them figure out the problem. Play includes five levels of addition, starting with simple 1-digit problems. Players must score 70% or greater to advance levels. Audio directions.

MathTappers: Find Sums An app compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, this simple, free game uses ten frames and is designed to help learners make sense of addition. It's an excellent game to explore with your child while you're on the go.

Math Lines In this game, race to pair numbers that add up to a target sum. Before your child plays, review the pairs of numbers that add up to the target sum. You might even look at different ways to make the number using game pieces, marbles, or pennies.

Number Bond Machine Select “Number Bonds to 5” to practice sums to 5 or choose “Set a Number” to select another target sum. Type in the number that makes the statement correct. (e.g. if your sum is 5 and the cards say “3 and __,” type in a 2.)

Geometry

Shapes/Geometry Complete puzzles by recognizing similarities and differences in shapes. As children master levels, the content gets progressively more difficult. The last stage includes an introduction to symmetry. Audio directions.

Curious George: I Love Shapes Move George up or down an assembly line to capture matching shapes (e.g, all the yellow triangles). The game starts slow and then picks up speed.

Geoboard App   With this virtual geoboard, students stretch bands around pegs to make discoveries about shapes. iPad and online versions available.

Measurement

Dinosaur Train: How Big Are You Estimate and measure the length of dinosaurs in non-standard units.

Christmas Ribbon Sorting Click on ribbons to uncurl, then drag and drop onto shelves to sort by length.

Grade 1

In grade 1 math, your child will:

  • solve addition and subtraction story problems
  • count by ones and tens to 120 read and write numbers to 120, and represent a number of objects up to 120 with a written numeral
  • understand place value by describing what the digits mean in two-digit numbers; use this knowledge to add and subtract
  • add 2-digit numbers using at least two different strategies and explain how the strategies work

Basic Addition

Marble Math Players see and hear an addition and are asked to choose a solution by clicking on one of three options. There are marbles at the bottom of the screen that players can drag into the provided boxes to help solve problems. Play includes five levels of addition, starting with simple 1-digit problems.

MathTappers: Find Sums This simple, free game uses ten frames and is designed to help learners make sense of addition. It's an excellent game to explore with your child while you're on the go as it is available for your IOS devices.

Math Lines In this game, players make quick decisions to pair numbers that add up to a target sum. Before you begin the game, review the pairs of numbers that add up to the target sum.

Missing Number Select a target sum and challenge your child to click and drag the missing number into the number sentence. The game is timed for one minute. Consider using 10 as a target sum.

Number Bond Machine Select ‘Number Bonds to 10’ to practice sums to 10 or choose ‘Set a Number’ to select another target sum. Type in the number that makes the statement correct and push the large, red check button.

Basic Subtraction

Balloon Pop Subtraction View a subtraction problem and pop balloons to figure out the solution. 3 levels of difficulty available as well as audio directions.

Butterfly Ten Frame View a ten frame filled with butterflies and watch several fly away. Click on the number to identify how many flew away and how many remain.

Minus Mission Practice subtraction within 10 by shooting at the expression that equals a given difference in this timed game.

Measurement

Dinosaur Train: How Big Are You Estimate and measure the length of dinosaurs in non-standard units.

Super Connect the Dots! In these connect the dot pictures, you set the counting sequence. For example, you could set the sequence to "2" and have your child practice counting by 2s while forming a picture. Before you begin, practice the counting sequence aloud with your child. Consider using counting sequences of 1s, 2s, 5s, or 10s.

Place Value

Number Sense PBS Cyberchase game in which player must create a 3-digit number bigger than Hacker's.

Higher or Lower Set the activity for numbers or objects to 10, 20, 100, or 1000 or input your own set of numbers to four digits.  Second graders may want to work on place value with 3-digits by selecting “numbers to 1000.” When the activity begins, click on 5 cards to reveal their values and click and drag to place them in order.

Give the Dog a Bone Find 10 "bones" by identifying numbers on a blank 100's grid.

Measurement

Inches to Feet Students match measurements in inches to their equivalent in inches and feet. This game involves mental computation that might be challenging for some.

Measurement Game: Centimeters View a red line next to a centimeter ruler and select the correct answer from four options.

Money

Coin Combo Players click on coins to equal total money value shown. Coins continually fall in columns; when a column fills, game is over. Levels increase in difficulty, starting with nickels & dimes and small money values and increasing to larger coins and money amounts.

Connect Sums Click on values that add up to a target sum. Clicked items must be next to each other. Values can be shown as dice, numbers, or money.

Learn to Count Money Players count money by clicking & dragging coins & bills into a box. The game becomes progressively more difficult as students master levels. Level 1, count to 99 cents. Level 2, count to $10. Level 3, count to $100. Also choose from beginner level (using any combination of coins) and expert levels (using least number of bills & coins.)

Geometry

Concentration Click on the shape mode to play a game in which you match each shape with its name.

Geoboard App With this virtual geoboard, students stretch bands around pegs to make discoveries about shapes. iPad and online versions available.

Fractions

Kite Shading Color kites to show given fractions. Demonstrate that fractions such as one-half can be shown in multiple ways.

Geometry

  • use models and strategies to divide 2- and 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers, with and without remainders. (Students are not expected to use the standard long division algorithm until sixth grade.)

  • multiply fractions and divide fractions in simple cases
  • measure volume
  • explain patterns in the number of zeros and the placement of the decimal point in the answer when multiplying or dividing by powers of 10.
  • read, write, round, compare, add & subtract, multiply & divide decimals
  • multiply multi-digit whole numbers
  • locate and graph points on a coordinate plane
